There are currently 4 first grade classrooms in the West Carroll Primary School which is located in Savanna, Illinois. The average class size is 20 students.

West Carroll uses the 2011 MacMillan/McGraw Reading and Language Arts series as the core for all students. This is a phonetic based literature program that offers a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction stories.  Also, the classroom teachers, in conjunction with the reading specialists, have adopted a program which specializes in developing the students’ individual reading excellence.  The first grade students are also able to work with a reading specialist for reading interventions.

West Carroll uses the Envision Math program. This series offers technology and hands on learning to promote mathematical excellence.

Each first grade classroom is equipped with a SMARTboard thanks to a grant from the West Carroll Education Foundation.  These enhance both reading and math programs.

The students are offered educational opportunities through guest speakers, grade level activity days, and field trips.
In addition, the first grade teachers are proud to coordinate the district’s Primary/Intermediate Science Fair each spring.

In first grade families are able to attend a Reading Night in the fall as well as a Writing Night in the spring.  These evenings encourage reading and writing for the students and help parents to better understand their role in their child’s literary journey.
