The Patriot's Pen Award Winners Announced
The Patriot’s Pen competition is conducted annually by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This year’s theme was “Are You Proud of Your Country?” and was chosen by the VFW’s Commander-in-Chief. On January 6, 2012, Mr. Bill Scott and Mr. Bruce Mottin, members of the VFW, presented three awards to students at West Carroll Middle School. Dylana Stine, 7th grade WCMS student, captured first place with a $100 check. Dylana is a student in Ms. Rein’s English class. Gloria Serrano-Moreno, 8th grade WCMS student, earned second place and received $75, and Allison Brunner, 8th grade WCMS student, won third place and received a check for $50 from the VFW. Both Gloria and Allison are students in Mrs. Jones’s English class. WCMS is proud of all the students that entered the competition and thanks the VFW for the opportunity to educate students about those that have served our country.

Perfect Attendance
West Carroll Middle School recently had an assembly to honor students who had perfect attendance and were on the honor roll for the second nine weeks.

RTI Students Go Bowling
RtI is a small group approach to address individual needs of students in reading and math. RtI students who reached at least 80% of their yearly goal on progress monitoring tests were treated to bowling during 6th, 7th, and 8th hour on Monday, December 19.. This was an incentive to motivate the students to work hard and have good behavior in RtI Reading and Math groups. Fifty-six (56) students participated in the trip. Thank you to the Mt. Carroll Bowling Center for a great afternoon.

Bird Feeders
Students in Mrs. McIntyre's 6th hour math class and Mrs. Blake's EXCEL classroom at West Carroll Middle School made bird feeders out of pine cones, peanut butter, and bird seed.
The finished pine cones were placed on trees at the Middle School.

Lights for Learning
All WCMS science teachers, Mr. Adams, Mr. Timm, and Mr. Foltz, cover energy efficiency in their science classes. WCMS does a fundraiser to raise awareness about home energy use and to generate funds the science teachers use to buy lab and classroom supplies. Staff hopes to spark discussions on energy use and efficiency at home as well as raise money. Energy efficient lighting products such as CFL light bulbs and LED lighting are sold at competitive rates.
John Koslowski recently held an assembly at WCMS to demonstrate how much energy it takes to light an old (Thomas Edison type) light bulb and the newer compact florescent light bulb.

Allison Whitehead, in the first picture (#6), and Mr. Adams, in the second (#10), demonstrate that the old fashioned light bulb took 3/4 more energy than the CFL light bulb. They are pictured with the presentor, John Koslowski.
PIES! PIES! PIES!
WCMS recently held a competition for students to sell Market Day Pies. For every 3 pies a student sold, the student was able to throw a pie at a teacher of his/her choice.

WCMS Magazine Sales Raise $2100!
West Carroll Middle School students held their annual magazine sales this year during the month of September. The four top salesman (and each invited a friend) were treated to a limo lunch. The four top salesman were Katie Hoffman, Brianna Kampmeier, Elizabeth Rath, and Shannon Sleeman. WCMS raised approximately $2100 during the magazine sales to offset the costs of field trips for students and fund educational expenses in the classrooms. Thanks to Mr. Z’s Sport’s Bar and Grill for the donation of the limo and driver.

Mr Timm's Science Class Enjoys Outdoor Learning!

Students in Mr. Timm’s sixth grade science class have been studying “Water on Earth” and the water cycle. They did an experiment on Transpiration and are checking to see how much water has transpired from various species of plants.
