Welcome to West Carroll

On behalf of the West Carroll Community Unit School District #314, I would like to invite you to the communities of Mount Carroll, Savanna, and Thomson so you can experience our rural charms.
The district provides a solid education for 1400 students in Pre-K – 12th grade.  Each town has an attendance center that allows similar grade levels to grow educationally, physically, and emotionally as they prepare for a bright future.  The district has been pro-active in creating inclusion instruction for special needs students while at the same time challenging the brightest students to become Illinois State Scholars.

From the Superintendent

At West Carroll, our focus is to improve student learning in the core subjects of reading, math, language arts, social studies, and science.  At the same time, many activities are planned outside of the classroom to assist students in applying their skills and understanding in community activities.  As a newly consolidated district in 2005-2006, great strides have been made to combine the strengths of three districts into benefiting the students who receive their instruction in West Carroll.
Steps are continued each year to provide an aligned curriculum in all subject areas, to challenge students “how” to think, and give them opportunities to apply the knowledge.  The teachers, faculty, and staff all encourage students to attain high levels of education.  A student at WC High School has the opportunity to obtain 32 college credits prior to graduation.  Our area vocational center offers other programs that have provided opportunities for our students to compete in national competitions in Restaurant management, Public Speaking, and other vocational endeavors.
To assist in supporting our district’s vision, our staff works to build relationships with students and support them in and outside of the classroom.  Curriculum offerings are evaluated annually to adjust to changing needs; a forensic class is being initiated in 2010-2011.  Extra curricular activities support this vision from Music Sweepstakes Champions, sporting teams that have qualified for the State finals, or FFA national recognition and a State Vice-president.
All students can learn!  West Carroll incorporates the Response to Intervention process to assess and support any student who needs extra help.  RtI processes regularly assess students to identify areas that need assistance so the student can experience increased academic success.  Teams of teachers will target a variety of interventions to assist every student who is falling behind in learning.
The strategies, instruction, and support are delivered by highly qualified and motivated staff members.  All of West Carroll’s teaching staff and support staff meet the Highly Qualified guidelines, teachers continue to take coursework to improve classroom delivery, and training opportunities for technology also occur as each child’s learning style is addressed.

West Carroll C.U.S.D. #314 sits in the middle of an outdoor paradise.  The area includes access to the Mississippi River, Palisades State Park, various snowmobile routes, and many hunting opportunities in the rolling hills.  You will get to experience a district that educates students well, encourages them to strive for long-term opportunities, and relax in an environment that supports high quality of life.
Annually 7 – 15% of our high school students are recognized as Illinois State Scholars.  Our music department has earned the status of being the Class B State Champions.  The FFA teachers and students advance and earn recognition at the national level.
I invite you to visit West Carroll C.U.S.D. #314 and let us demonstrate what we can offer educationally, in community support, and free-time activities.  I will caution you.  Once you see what we have to offer, you may just stay.  I did!
